Dads – You Matter Too!



We know how important your relationship and role is with your child and we are here to support you. Research shows how important the early years are in your child’s brain development which can have a profound impact on their social and emotional abilities as they grow up. We are here to support you to create positive relationships with your child. It is also beneficial for you, your partner and child if you can attend any appointments with the Health Visitor.



The transition to parenthood is difficult, here are a few suggestions to help ease this transition.

– Ask for advice

 -Be involved as much as possible                               

– Try Skin to skin contact with your baby

– Communicate with your partner

– Talk, play, and read with your baby

– Enjoy the cuddles and eye contact

– Rest when able


Following the birth of a child, Dads can sometimes experience depression.

Symptoms can include:

– Feeing down, sad, or hopeless

– Feelings of not being able to cope

– Struggling to bond with your baby

– Constant tiredness, struggling to fall asleep

– Numbness

– Worrying that you don’t love your baby enough

– Feeling Irritable

– Anxiety or Panic Attacks

– Loss of appetite

– Having thoughts of self-harm

How can I support my partner to breastfeed?

There are a number of ways that you can support your partner during the breastfeeding journey. Research shows that when partners support breastfeeding, women are much more likely to breastfeed for longer, increasing health benefits for both mum and baby. Breastfeeding is a new skill that must be learnt and by providing positive affirmations and support you can boost her confidence in this. It can be helpful for you to read around breastfeeding, the importance of regular and frequent feeds, the early feeding cues that your baby does before they start crying, such as putting their hands and fingers in their mouths, poking their tongue out and rooting – moving their head side to side.  For further information please discuss with your Health Visitor. Why is my baby crying?

Babies cry for lots of different reasons, and this is normal. It can be useful to work through reasons why your baby might be crying. Are they hungry? Are they tired? Do they need a nappy change?

Sometimes you might feel overwhelmed by this, if this happens it is important to either ask your partner to hold the baby or to put the baby down in a safe place and take a breath. After a few minutes, when you are feeling calmer, go back to your baby. If you are finding yourself getting stressed about your baby’s crying more frequently it is important to tell someone how you are feeling so support can be offered.

How can I bond with my baby?

There are many different ways to bond with your baby. Lots of cuddles, singing, talking and playing with your baby. Skin to skin is also beneficial for not only Mums, but for Dads too.
