The School Nursing Service across Wiltshire is required to make sure all children and young people in Wiltshire’s schools, colleges and academies have access to a school nurse to provide information and support to all school aged children and their families.
We work in partnership with schools to support the development of health policies that impact on all children and young people, complementing any health-related classroom based programmes being delivered.
How can we help?
The school nursing service will:
- Promote public health and healthy lifestyles
- Safeguard children from harm and reduce risk taking
- Provide health education and advice
- Participate in national campaigns and initiatives e.g. national child measurement programme
- Deliver the national childhood immunisation programme
- Provide school-based health clinics
- Work with children and young people who have complex medical needs
We hold weekly drop-in sessions at all schools across Wiltshire. Pupils can use the time to talk to the nurse in confidence one to one about any health, wellbeing or personal concerns. To find out when the school nurse is holding a session at the child’s school, either ask parents/carers to contact their local team to the right of the page or speak to their school receptionist or teacher.
Find materials, forms and letters to promote immunisations in your school or setting.
Making a referral
The school nursing service accepts self-referrals through school drop ins by the young person themselves.
Children and young people can also be referred by parents and carers, who can get in touch using the contact details on the team pages to the right of the page.
Other agencies including education staff, GP and social care, must complete a referral form before the school nursing service can become involved.
What happens next?
Upon receiving a referral form or a self-referral a school nurse will make contact with the young person through school. Should additional information be required or parental discussion, this will take place prior to meeting the child in school.
We run a regular rolling programme to meet the needs of staff new to caring for children and young people with or for those who require their annual update to maintain competency. This training is available with no fee for all staff employed by a Wiltshire School who work with Wiltshire children and young people.
