School Age Immunisations

The School Age Immunisation Service provides vaccinations to children and young people aged 5-16 (Aged 19 if attending a special school) across Wiltshire, Swindon, Bath & North East Somerset (B&NES).

For those who are home educated, not currently attending school, or requiring catch up vaccinations, appointments can be made at local community clinics. Vaccinations are provided by HCRG Care Group on behalf of the NHS, in line with the National Childhood Immunisation Programme.

Successful delivery of the programme is due to the close relationship between the School Aged Immunisation team and the schools we work with. We highly value the support that schools provide in ensuring our teams are able to provide safe and effective delivery of the sessions.

To consent to any vaccination you will need a School or Electively Home Education Code; these can be found here:

The Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tetanus (TdIPV) and Meningitis ACWY (MenACWY) consent form can be accessed here: TDIPV MenACWY Vaccination Consent Form

Meningococcal disease: important information

Following the recent outbreak in Kent, we are reminding families about the signs and symptoms of meningococcal disease.

Young people starting university or college are at greater risk because they mix closely with large numbers of other students.

Meningococcal disease is uncommon but serious. It is caused by meningococcal bacteria and can lead to meningitis and septicaemia, which can quickly become life-threatening. Early diagnosis and treatment with antibiotics are vital.

Symptoms can include:

  • a rash that does not fade when pressed with a glass
  • sudden high fever
  • severe headache
  • stiff neck
  • vomiting or diarrhoea
  • joint or muscle pain
  • sensitivity to bright lights
  • very cold hands and feet
  • seizures
  • confusion
  • extreme drowsiness or difficulty waking

The MenACWY vaccine helps protect against MenA, MenC, MenW and MenY, and is routinely offered to children in Years 9 and 10. It does not protect against all types of meningococcal disease, including some cases caused by MenB, so it is still important to know the symptoms and seek urgent medical advice if concerned.

If your child missed their vaccination, it can still be given up to the end of Year 11 through the School Aged Immunisation Service. Please call 0300 247 0200 for help with consent forms or booking a clinic appointment.

If you have left school, are under 25, and have not yet had the vaccine, please contact your GP practice.

Further information can be found on the NHS website here.

If you need any help or advice regarding a child’s vaccinations, do not hesitate to contact the Immunsation Service on 0300 247 0200 (Monday – Friday 9am – 4:30pm).

What if a child has already had the vaccine?

In some cases, your child may have already received some of the vaccines we deliver as part of the programme. For example, the Diphtheria, Tetanus and Polio vaccine can be given by a GP or in Accident and Emergency following an injury like an animal bite and the Meningitis vaccine may have been given as a travel vaccine.

If your child has had these vaccines since they were aged 10, please let us know.

What if a child has missed a vaccination or requires a community clinic appointment?

We regularly hold catch up clinics in community venues for the following:

  • Home-schooled children
  • Vulnerable children requiring vaccination prior to the scheduled school date
  • Children who have missed their vaccination at the scheduled time.
  • Children who have refused vaccination in a school setting, or require additional support.

To book a appointment, please contact the Immunisation Service on 0300 247 0200. Please make sure you book in advance.

How do I know which vaccination my child is due?

You will receive an email via your child’s school with details of which vaccination your child is due, providing information about the vaccination and a link for you to complete a consent form, or decline the vaccination. If your child is home educated you will receive information via the Local Authority and can book your child into a clinic.
